Hi, I'm Pauline 👋  Are you ready to hear my story? Let's go!

I moved to London from Beijing on my own at the age of 17 to attend university. After completing my master's, I became a full-time microblogger on Weibo under a social media name I created. I shared content and advice about the British lifestyle and culture with Chinese students living in the UK. In less than a year, I gained 200,000 online followers.

One year later, I founded my own digital media and marketing company with the help of angel investment. My social media name became a brand name. I took the role of managing director and worked hard to scale the business to 7-figure revenue.

We managed a website, an app, multiple social media accounts, and a newsletter subscription, all in-house. We produced daily content and achieved a combined media readership of 1.8 million. I had a team of 20 employees, and we worked with some top UK and global brands.

In 2023, I sold my business to pursue a new chapter in life. Building meaningful and authentic brands has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy working with talented founders who believe in their mission and products that make a difference in people's lives.

So.. why should founders invest in branding?

Branding is more than a name, logo, and look. It is a crucial element of a business's long-term success. Building a brand will take time and effort. It's an ongoing process that comes with financial commitment, and many people may not see the value in the investment, especially when they are starting out.

Based on my experience as an entrepreneur, here are three scenarios when brand investment is definitely worth it and should be a priority:

Scenario 1: You want to sell at a premium price or partner with well-known brands.

Scenario 2: You want to attract investors and sell your business one day.

Scenario 3: You want your customers to trust and like you more than your competitors.

Also, here are three lessons I've learned as an entrepreneur:

Lesson 1: Your brand is everything your company does. The desire to build and protect my brand compelled me to create a better business for my customers and employees.

Lesson 2: Owning a brand kept me sane. It reminded me that I am separate from the brand; I am its guardian. As a result, I was able to respond to day-to-day business challenges without taking them personally.

Lesson 3: Businesses can fail, but a brand's value can be sustained and passed on.
